High on Endorphins

Fellow Laughter Yoga Teacher Gene Furbee and I made a Laughter Pilgrimage to the “All America Laughter Yoga Conference” this past weekend.

It was a blast. The highlight for us was the Saturday night Laughter Championships. We intended to watch, but could not help ourselves.

Our adventure began when I drove 5 of us, Gene, three ladies from Minnesota and myself to a wonderful restaurant I was raving about only to find it was closed! We all laughed. Luckily, across the street we found a sushi place and had many laughs there.

On the way back, we kept triggering each other in laughter and by the time we got to the venue, we were quite anarchic and disruptive. We chose to watch the proceedings from outside as we continued laughing so loudly. (We even got shushed by one of the organizers. Something to add to the resume’: “Got shushed for laughing too loudly at a Laughter Yoga conference.”)

Anyway, when the three registed teams had performed their first laughter challenge, we spontaneously burst onto the stage and did our thing. We were five and already breaking the rules as teams were supposed to be only four members.

This mayhem continued on through all the different laughter challenges (I think I now know what it must have felt like to be a Marx Brother.)

The last challenge was for us to perform the “mating call of the WaWa bird.” Gene and I went on stage by ourselves without the rest of the team and started our woo woo calling facing away from each other. Slowly we turned to each other and were attracted to each other. Then the three lady birds came on stage all confused about two males attracted to each other.

I have to buy the video of the conference now to see what this looked like from the outside.

From the inside, I cannot remember laughging so loudly, so deeply, so long and so joyously in all my life.

The next morning, we five got up and sang we were sorry, i.e. we chanted the Ho’Oponopono song: “I’m sorry, Please forgive me, thank you, I love you.”

Beyond the fun, we had some sincere learning. (Laughter Yoga folks are never serious, but we are sincere.)
My take away message came from two LY clubs who have expanded their missions and become much more social. They spend more time together socializing and even go on trips together.
For the fall session, it’s my intention to serve tea and possibly even cookies after Laughter Yoga classes.

When cells get enough oxygen, cancer will not and cannot occur.” (My bolding) **Dr. W. Fry states that 10 minutes of hearty laughter is equal to 30 minutes or rowing or jogging.(Journal of General Psychology, 1938) Laughter Yoga goes beyond just laughter. Founder Dr. Madan Kataria has developed techniques to stimulate childlike playfulness, to adjust the aerobic and stretching component, and to promote emotional flow and release. Laughter Yoga can improve your physical health, release negative thoughts and emotions and get in touch with your spiritual nature. It helps us to develop an attitude of forgiveness, generosity, compassion and helpfulness while actively seeking the happiness of others. Combined, these principles can provide a powerful life-changing experience that we call the inner spirit of laughter. Laughter Yoga Clubs are non-political, non-religious, non-profit. There are a number of clubs in the Victoria area. Email for more info and current schedule:
