How to Feel Good Even When Ill. Laughter: The Newsletter January 11, 2013

Here’s hoping you had a great holiday season. Laughter Yoga continues at a few locations around Victoria. The Esquimalt location is unavailable to us now, so Soren Russow and I are searching for a new location. We are hoping it will be in the OakBay area, or Fairfield or Fernwood as I am now living in OakBay.

If you know of a venue that may work, let me know.

How to Feel Good Even When Ill

(this article is about how I used smiling to feel good when I got sick over the holidays. I hope you find it useful.)

It’s Christmas eve and I am with family in the Finnish countryside. Now, in Finland, Christmas Eve is when everything happens.

At noon, there is the Christmas Peace proclamation over the TV. Traditionally, everyone watches. Then, the Christmas sauna in the afternoon.

Early evening, the huge and delicious Christmas dinner. The Tension mounts as the children wait for “Joulupukki” or Santa to show up. In some homes, he actually comes inside and distributes the gifts. In others, we see him briefly outside the window and the gifts are dropped at the door.

The only problem is just as we are starting to eat, I come up with a fever and the chills. Uncontrollable shivering AND I can’t eat a bite!

Now, you may think this a disaster. I would have thought so too in previous times.

But with my experience with Laughter Yoga, I now have a secret weapon: a smile.

That’s right. Even though I am shivering with a fever and my body is rebelling against eating, I still feel good.

And it is the smile. As long as I maintain it, I continue to feel good. This is truly amazing.

We know that laughter causes the body to produce endorphins. It is the same with a smile.

I can feel the joy despite my body being racked with fever. What an amazing discovery.

I suspect the smile produced endorphins are also a major healing agent.

If you have not yet discovered laughing and smiling for joy and health, you can do so here: http://joyenergyandhealth.com/

You will notice the site says how to have authentic joy even when unhappy. I can now happily add: even when ill.

Try it out for your next illness.

Just For Fun

“When Buddhist teacher Thich Nhat Hanh was invited to the San FranciscoZenCenter, the students asked him what they could do to improve their practice. He had entered a monastery at age sixteen, was an ordained monk, and had endured the horrors of the war in Vietnam. I imagine they expected some rigorous prescription for deepening their spiritual life.

“Thich Nhat Han’s response: ‘You guys get up too early for one thing; you should get up a little later. And your practice is too grim. I have just two instructions for you. One is to breathe, and one is to smile.'”

All for now,

Fry states that 10 minutes of hearty laughter is equal to 30 minutes or rowing or jogging.(Journal of General Psychology, 1938) Laughter Yoga goes beyond just laughter. Founder Dr. Madan Kataria has developed techniques to stimulate childlike playfulness, to adjust the aerobic and stretching component, and to promote emotional flow and release. Laughter Yoga can improve your physical health, release negative thoughts and emotions and get in touch with your spiritual nature. It helps us to develop an attitude of forgiveness, generosity, compassion and helpfulness while actively seeking the happiness of others. Combined, these principles can provide a powerful life-changing experience that we call the inner spirit of laughter. Laughter Yoga Clubs are non-political, non-religious, non-profit.
