Here’s hoping you had a great holiday season. Laughter Yoga continues at a few locations around Victoria. The Esquimalt location is unavailable to us now, so Soren Russow and I are searching for a new location. We are hoping it will be in the OakBay area, or Fairfield or Fernwood as I am now living in OakBay.

How to Feel Good Even When Ill

(this article is about how I used smiling to feel good when I got sick over the holidays. I hope you find it useful.)

It’s Christmas eve and I am with family in the Finnish countryside. Now, in Finland, Christmas Eve is when everything happens.

At noon, there is the Christmas Peace proclamation over the TV. Traditionally, everyone watches. Then, the Christmas sauna in the afternoon.

Early evening, the huge and delicious Christmas dinner. The Tension mounts as the children wait for “Joulupukki” or Santa to show up. In some homes, he actually comes inside and distributes the gifts. In others, we see him briefly outside the window and the gifts are dropped at the door.

The only problem is just as we are starting to eat, I come up with a fever and the chills. Uncontrollable shivering AND I can’t eat a bite!

Now, you may think this a disaster. I would have thought so too in previous times.

But with my experience with Laughter Yoga, I now have a secret weapon: a smile.

That’s right. Even though I am shivering with a fever and my body is rebelling against eating, I still feel good.

And it is the smile. As long as I maintain it, I continue to feel good. This is truly amazing.

We know that laughter causes the body to produce endorphins. It is the same with a smile.

I can feel the joy despite my body being racked with fever. What an amazing discovery.

I suspect the smile produced endorphins are also a major healing agent.
