But many are stuck in a “No-Laughter Prison.”
The prison is the belief that we have to have a reason to laugh.
That we need a joke or comedy or SOMETHING from outside of us that triggers the laughter.
Ask yourself if you believe that.
As I am writing, I realize I have a dour look on my face. (though no one is looking). I start to laugh and chuckle and smile as I write this…there, that’s better, now the words are flowing better and I feel better and I am enjoying it more.
Everything goes better with laughter, chuckles and/or smiles.
It is great to be out of prison.
I hope to help others escape this prison too.

Benefits of Laughter Yoga
1) LAUGHTER STIMULATES BLOOD CIRCULATION AND RESPIRATION
Research has shown that laughter reduces levels of stress hormones while increasing health-enhancing hormones. In the University of Maryland in Baltimore, a scientist discovered that when subjects laughed, blood flow increases by up to 22% to the rest of the body.
2) BOOSTS THE IMMUNE SYSTEM.
Studies completed at Indiana State University, Linda Loma Medical Center and the National Cancer Center in California shows that the immune system functioning greatly increases after laughter. It is boosted by up to 40% after a hearty laugh.
3) INCREASED BLOOD FLOW TO THE HEART
Increased blood flow to the heart can be a good thing in that the heart has a high amount of oxygen consumption. More healthy blood flow equals a healthy heart.
4) ENCOURAGES THE RELEASE OF ENDORPHINS
Endorphins are the hormones that give us those warm fuzzy feelings when we hold a baby or play with a baby animal like a dog or cat. It is also known as the happy hormone and also works as a natural painkiller.
Norman Cousins suffered from a disease of the spine that medicinal painkillers could not soothe. He started laughter therapy which supported him in reducing the intensity of the pain that he felt, and could experience pain-free sleep up to 2 hours after a laughter session where before, sleep was difficult. In other words, laughter is a natural pain-killer.
5) LOWER BLOOD PRESSURE
Though our blood pressure rises during a laughing session, a few minutes later after the laughing has ceased our resting rate is lower and blood pressure decreases.
6) DISLIKE EXERCISE? OR WORK? LAUGH INSTEAD!
Laughing can increase calorie expenditure by up to 20% depending on the intensity of the laugh. And perhaps work isn’t all that it is cut out to be either…. Laughter yoga is known to reduce stress in the workplace, as well as support people in feeling more productive with higher amounts of energy which can lead to increased productivity.
7) LAUGH AWAY MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL ILLNESSES

We live in a fast-paced world filled with the daily to-dos of life, and if we aren’t aware this fast-paced lifestyle may have an effect on our mind and body through diseases such as anxiety, depression and insomnia. If left unchecked, these diseases will have a negative effect on our quality of life and our ability to acknowledge all that we have to be thankful for. Laughter not only supports people in having better quality of sleep, it is a great way to release stress and tension that might otherwise be left in the body.
In summary, there are still many more studies being done on this topic. And even if you DON’T believe laughing can support us in living healthier and happier, it is at the very least fun to do. So what have you got to lose?
